Author: Yogi Brahmasamhara [an Aussie]
This is a book of wisdom – wisdom for its understanding of human nature, wisdom for its answers to the unhappiness in modern life, and wisdom for the person-to-person way in which it is written. Among the numerous books written about meditation, this one jumps out – the author is an Aussie boy from the bush who knows the Australian way of life and its stresses and distresses first hand. The book is practical, easy to read and comprehensive in 297 pages. [An interview with the author was published in the Autumn 2009 issue of Natural Health and Vegetarian Life.]
Paul, or Brahm as we call him, grew up on a remote property in south-western New South Wales where, often alone, he had plenty of time to contemplate nature and live ‘in the present moment’. After moving to Sydney to study, he chanced to meet meditation masters who opened his eyes to a depth of understanding of human nature and its problems and solutions far beyond what he had ever imagined. The result is a career of teaching meditation in Sydney, writing a book and helping a lot of people to ease their stress levels and increase happiness.
Brahm guides the reader, step by step, from the very first ‘toe in the water’ to as far as you want to go. His whole focus is on dealing with human discontent, which he sees as being responsible for war, greed, environmental destruction and half the planet exercising gluttony while the other half starves. At the individual level, it underlies depression, melancholy, anxiety and an expanding array of physical illnesses. Also, people are becoming more insular and isolated.
Through meditation, the author explains, we can “practise letting go the unnecessary burdens of life … and begin to fully experience and cherish each precious moment of our magnificent being.” These experiences can lift us to increasing levels of awakeness.
A fair chunk of the book is devoted to the three ‘essences’ – letting go of tension, mastering ‘right’ breathing, and stilling the unquiet mind. The book then takes us into the realms of authentic meditation which perhaps, few people have entered, but which Brahm shows, all can.
