There is growing interest in a field called ‘quantum biology’ for achieving true natural health. ‘Quantum’ refers to the smallest unit, or packet of energy or matter. This unit behaves according to the rules of quantum physics. Quantum biology explores how these units, photons and electrons, affect our biology.

Our health is better understood when viewed not only through the biochemical and physiological, but also at a subatomic level. Currently, our biology is mostly explained through classical physics—a macroscopic view (e.g., nutrition, supplements, drugs, etc.)—to describe how large molecules interact, chemical gradients form, and how energy is exchanged. However, this doesn’t explain the speed, precision and efficiency observed in biological processes. We are not just biochemical machines, but finely tuned electrical and energetic systems.

What Is Quantum Health
Quantum biology explains how the body works at a fundamental level, and quantum health is its practical application. Quantum health focuses on optimising the body’s subatomic energy transactions—particularly in the mitochondria—to improve health, vitality and longevity.

Mitochondria are tiny but crucial structures inside almost every cell. Each cell contains hundreds to thousands of them, and their main job is to convert food and oxygen into a usable form of energy called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Mitochondria produce around 90% of the body’s energy, and their ability to do so depends on the flow of protons and electrons.

Environmental factors such as light, water and magnetism influence us at a subatomic energetic level. Aligning our bodies with natural light cycles, using specific light frequencies (such as red or near-infrared) therapeutically, maintaining high-quality structured water in our cells, and reducing electromagnetic pollution all support mitochondrial function and ultimately promote optimal health. When mitochondrial function is impaired, cellular energy declines—and health issues arise.

Light
As a holistic optometrist, I’m especially interested in quantum biology and its relationship with eye health. The human eye is a perfect example of quantum biology in action. Vision begins with light—a quantum phenomenon. Photoreceptors, specialised cells in the retina, detect light and convert it into electrical signals processed by the brain. The quality of light (wavelength, coherence and timing) influences these processes. Overexposure to blue or artificial light can impair mitochondrial function. Red and near-infrared light have been shown to enhance mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress.

Natural sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms. Our circadian rhythms, not only influence hormones such as melatonin that affect sleep, metabolism, mood and immune function. Circadian rhythms also govern many cellular processes.

Water
Water makes up more than 60% of the human body and plays a crucial role in cellular function that extends beyond hydration. Research in quantum biology suggests that the water inside cells—H₃O₂, known as EZ (exclusion zone) water—is denser than ordinary water. This water carries a net negative electric charge, unlike the surrounding bulk water, which behaves as if it is positively charged.

EZ water forms next to hydrophilic (water-loving) surfaces such as cell membranes, proteins and other biological interfaces. This charge difference acts like a tiny battery within every cell, influencing how cells transmit energy, maintain order, communicate and detoxify. EZ water helps exclude impurities and protects against oxidative stress and inflammation.

Magnetism
The Earth has a natural negative electrical field, saturating its surface with enormous amounts of free electrons. Quantum biology recognises that our bodies are linked to this electrical field, constantly exchanging electrons with our environment. Electrons generate tiny magnetic fields, and this magnetism influences mitochondrial function and overall health.

Restore your electron flow:
Grounding or earthing: Connect your skin directly to the Earth’s negative charge by walking barefoot on grass, sand or soil. Free electrons transfer into the body, acting as potent natural antioxidants that neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS, also known as free radicals), which drive inflammation, pain and oxidative stress. Grounding also helps reset our biological clock, shifts our nervous system from fight or flight (sympathetic) to rest and repair (parasympathetic) mode, balances hormones, improves heart rate variability and heart health.
Reduce NN-EMFs (non-native electromagnetic fields): These incoherent, human-made electrical and wireless frequencies—from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile networks and electrical devices —disrupt the natural energies of the Earth and sun. Minimise usage and maintain distance; the further you are from these sources, the better for your quantum health (inverse square law).

Redox Before Detox
The concept of redox before detox comes from quantum biology. Before the body can effectively detoxify, it must first restore a healthy redox (reduction–oxidation) balance within its cells. Mitochondria depend on efficient redox reactions to make ATP. When our redox state is healthy, cells have optimal electron flow, stable energy production and low oxidative stress. When it is poor, mitochondrial function slows, inflammation rises and detoxification pathways become sluggish.

We need good redox status to detoxify efficiently. Detoxification techniques such as saunas, binders (substances that attach to toxins and heavy metals, like charcoal or chlorella), fasting and liver cleansing are far more effective and less taxing when redox balance is strong.

Other holistic practices—including stress management, quality sleep, optimal nutrition, mitochondrial-supportive supplements (such as N-acetylcysteine, glutathione and CoQ10), breathwork, a positive mindset and hormetic stressors (like brief cold exposure, exercise or fasting)—also promote quantum health. These practices enhance mitochondrial efficiency and balance the body’s energy field.

We are not just physical beings, but vibrational, light-sensitive organisms. Our health is optimised through our relationship with light, water and the energy of the Earth.
