NHSA COMMITTEE MEMBER – Position Description

Position Title:  Member of the Natural Health Society of Australia National Committee

Term of Office:  Members hold office until the conclusion of the AGM following the date of the member’s election, but are eligible for re-election

Reports to:  The National Committee

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A Committee member is responsible for contributing to the collective decision making of the Committee and cannot make decisions for the organisation independently of other members.

A Committee member is responsible for:

  • Understanding the business of the organisation and being aware of key developments
  • Governing and overseeing an organisation’s operations and performance
  • Regularly preparing for, attending and participating in monthly Committee and special meetings or, if unable to, providing an apology. Reviewing agenda and supporting documents prior to meetings
  • Providing advice, opinions and independent judgment to inform Committee decisions
  • Being active in the organisation, such as by attending functions or events as the Society’s representative
  • Participating in Committee work, including Sub-committees and volunteer assignments
  • Attending the Annual General Meeting (in person or via electronic media). Nominating/electing office bearers from amongst Committee members
  • Actively participating in annual planning and evaluation efforts
  • Adhering to confidentiality policies
  • Declaring and monitoring actual or perceived conflicts of interest

 

KEY SKILLS/PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Possess communication skills to act with tact, diplomacy, integrity and sensitivity
  • Possess financial management skill to understand financial information/documents
  • Possess teamwork and team management skills to work constructively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate respect for colleagues and commitment to the Society by attending all meetings and being punctual and fully prepared
  • Educate yourself about your legal and ethical obligations as a Committee member
  • Be prepared to learn new skills and share your knowledge and experience
  • Accept and support the decisions of the majority of the Committee

 

TIME DEMANDS

  • Participate in at least 75% of Committee meetings (9 monthly meetings), approximately 2 hours in length, on the second Tuesday of the month and related work (1-3 hours per month as determined by the Committee)
  • Attend and actively participate in the Annual General Meeting (includes Committee elections and is followed by a Committee meeting – approximately 3 hours), and attend special meetings
  • Attend special events organised by the Society
